ISTTS is now back in holding KSP season 6 with the topic "Non-Photography skills for Photography". The 7th episode of KSP was presented by ISTTS Visual Communication Design (DKV) lecturer, Mr. Yulius Widi Nugroho, S.Sn., M.Sc. or who is familiar with the well-known Pak Yulius. The seminar, which was held on Thursday, July 16, 2020, was attended by internal ISTTS participants and external participants through the zoom platform and YouTube live streaming. Pak Yulius explained the non-skill photography material that a photographer needs to have in order to develop the photography business.
Why do you need to have Non Skill Photography?
The rapid development of technology has resulted in other social developments, one of which is in the world of photography. In the industrial era 4.0 almost all need a visual display and all need communication. For Pak Yulius, Covid-19 was dubbed a hero because previously industry 4.0 was still in doubt. And now, everyone is inevitably sued for doing almost everything online.
The era of multimedia is extraordinary development. Youtube and Facebook are now the most widely used social media in the world. Whereas the most widely used social media in Indonesia are Whatsapp, Instagram, and Line. Therefore we must understand how important social media is for marketing strategies.
Pak Yulius also emphasized that photography is not as easy as many lay people think. Photographers must also be able to communicate with clients, do editing, have techniques in photographing and so forth.
Then what kind of non-skill photography needs to have? According to Pak Yulius, there are several things that a photographer needs to have. Some of them are:
1. Digital Retouching Skill
Photographers are required to have editing skills because he is the one who best knows the conditions when photographing objects. Pak Yulius also suggested that photographers edit their own photos. When using an editor, there must be mature ideas and concepts from the photographer. Concepts and ideas are needed to retouch raw photos into final photos as desired.
2. Communication skills
Having communication skills helps the photographer to discuss with clients or with their colleagues, such as editors and assistants about the concepts to be made.
3. Writing skills
Writing skills are generally owned by photographers who work in the field of journalism. They have to write captions and even news texts to pass on to readers. This is useful for balancing information from the image to get to the reader.
4. Audio visual skills
The use of audio visual is very high on social media / internet. Photographers certainly have a plus if they have expertise for video editing. This skill is commonly used for branding, making it one of the promising things in the photography business. Although editing can be done by an editor, photographers can still contribute ideas for concepts to be made.
5. Marketing skills
According to Pak Yulius, researching a lot about target markets and opportunities is important in the photography business. Photographers will find markets that match their skills. In addition, photographers are also required to have many creative ideas to attract the attention of clients.
6. Information technology skills
A photographer must also master the technology and everything in it. They need to know the characteristics of the various types of social media that exist, starting from the user and to upload something. They need to know who the majority of users are so that the business can run on target. Although they do not need to master information technology as a whole, at least they should be able to manage business accounts and publish their work properly.
At the end of the session, Pak Yulius gave a suggestion when doing the photography business, one of the important things was to have a portfolio. This is very useful for improving communication to discuss with clients and also business branding.
The seminar was then ended with a question and answer session and sharing between participants and speakers about photography and then ended by taking a group photo and also filling out questionnaires and attendance for participants who had attended the seminar.
