Freedom in the Middle of a Pandemic, They Say

Indonesia's 75th Independence Day feels very different. There is no 17s race like the previous years. In fact, the ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta was held very simply, not many officers or officials were present. Other agencies also hold flag ceremonies, it's just online.

This event is understandable, because during the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts were always made to carry out physical distancing. Since March 2020, PSBB (Large-Scale Social Restrictions) have been implemented in a number of areas to reduce the spread of COVID-19. PSBB forces all activities that trigger the crowd to stop until conditions are safe enough from COVID-19. Therefore, all forms of events that can trigger crowds are held online, including schools and flag ceremonies on independence day.

Although the anniversary of the State of Indonesia is simple, on social media the atmosphere of independence is very much felt. Not a few of social media users revealed the differences between pre-pandemic independence and independence this year. So, what do they think about independence this year that is different from previous years?
The chairman of HIMA SIB 2020-2021, Nathania Josephine, answered that there were quite a lot of differences between previous independence and independence during the pandemic. "Obviously there are many differences. In the past, the ceremony was held offline, this year online. For the August 17 competition, which is usually held offline, this time it was held online or not at all, "said Nathania when contacted by journalists, Wednesday (19/8/2020)
Even though there are big differences, Nathania doesn't really mind this. According to him, even though the pandemic restricts us from leaving the house, it does not mean that we can remain silent. In fact, this will be an opportunity to explore potential. "Pandemic does not mean it's time for us to lie down all day, but it is time for us to explore our potential so that we are ready to face the changes that will come," he continued.

On the other hand, the Chairman of BEM ISTTS 2020-2021, Yoel Verentino does not see a big difference from the implementation of this year's flag ceremony. What is different is the strict application of the Health protocol. He invites all children to stay excited about the day. "For every young person as the nation's successor, don't be ashamed to admit that we are the nation's children. Make the Indonesian people proud in your own way. Continue to spread the spirit of red and white and do your best, "he concluded.
